How Old Is Your Dog In Human Years?
Sometimes it’s quite easy to tell when it’s a senior dog. Maybe a black lab no longer is all black, they have grey hair sprinkled throughout their coat or around their face they have a grey beard.
How can you know your dog’s age in people years?
You may have heard, one human year equals seven dog years. That simply is a myth. There is no straight line math formula.
Dogs tend to age more quickly early on, then slows down over time. Also, other factors need to be taken into account, like the size, type and breed.
Generally the smaller the dog the longer life in human years they may have. Small pups tend to reach adulthood between 10-12 months. Medium size dogs reach adulthood between 12-16 months.
There is no formula everyone agrees upon, but to calculate a pets age we can assume a 1 year old dog is equal to about 12-15 human years. The chart is a guideline. Other things come into play, like the heavier the dog gets the faster they may age.
If you’ve adopted a rescue pup and don’t know their history to know how old they are you can look for clues. Looking at the teeth gives a good rough idea of age which varies from dog to dog.
By about 7-8 month all permanent teeth are in and nice and white. At 1-2 years teeth may become duller and back teeth have some yellowing.
As the dogs age the teeth develop tartar buildup and tooth wear. The older they are there may be signs of disease. After 10-15 years some teeth may start falling out. Proper dental care is essential for your dogs health and may alter these age estimates.
Senior dogs may require more care than adults. As your pet ages it’s important to see your vet regularly. The vet will help to monitor muscle, vision or hear loss or other medical issues.
