What Does It Cost To Own A Dog?
Every dog I see I want to bring home. Occasionally I browse adoptable dogs too. If I had all the money in the world I’d rescue all the dogs and give them a happy life.
A dog can be a wonderful addition to the family. Pets provide companionship, friendship, secret keeper and all they ask for in return is love and an occasional treat. Who am I kidding, unlimited treats.
With all the unwanted dogs available in the classifieds, it would seem that owning a pet is essentially free. Unfortunately, owning a dog can be a significant expense over time and money.
Consider these costs before getting a new pet:
Acquiring A Pet
Pets are adoptable through rescue groups or available from breeders or petshops. A pet could be free or cost thousands of dollars, depending on the animal and situation.
Consider adoption or rescue groups. Hundreds, even thousands of animals need homes. You can simply Google the breed you prefer and “rescue group” and you’ll likely find a dog needing a loving home.
Accessories
Once your new pet is part of the family you’ll want and needs lots of stuff.
Bowls, collar, leash, toys, carpet cleaner, car carrier or restraint, and a pet bed are just a few of the items that many people choose to purchase. Some people even have cute clothes for their pet. I’m not big on pet clothes and I can only imagine what your pet thinks of having to dress up when you have an itch, but they do look cute and they are such good sports about it.
Most people buy Christmas gifts or even celebrate their furry friends birthday with dog friendly cakes.
Food
There is a wide variety of pet foods. Quality should be considered. Afterall you don’t like to eat cheap food and you probably enjoy variety in your meals.
Pet foods vary dramatically in both cost and quality. Do your research. Sometimes you may want to add some healthy people foods like carrots or cheese. Be sure to subscribe to receive a list of foods that are unhealthy for animals. (for example, garlic, chocolate and avocados are toxic to dogs)
Depending on the the size of your dog it’s also possible to spend $600 or more annually.
Medical
Just like hoomans, dogs need check-ups and medical attention. Medical expenses include:
Annual vaccinations and check-ups
Heartworm and flea preventative
Spaying and neutering
Many breeds of dogs tend to have specific health challenges. For example, dachshunds may have back problems that require surgery. Labs are prone to hip issues. And bulldogs have difficulty whelping and routinely require c-sections.
Heaven forbid if your dog gets sick or injured. You do not want to make a decision to save your pet based on finances.
Miscellaneous
Other miscellaneous expenses come up too like,
Boarding: Do you ever go on vacation without your pet?
Obedience training
Grooming and trimming
Fencing around your home
Doggie daycare: If you have an inside dog or are away from home for long periods during the day, you might want someone to take them out periodically when you’re gone or have your pet have a puppy play date.
Before committing to having a pet join your family consider the financial aspect too. In my opinion if you have the means the joy you’ll receive will be well worth it.
